Nigeria Considers Reciprocal Measures Against US Visa Policy Changes

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced it will consider reciprocal measures against the United States following Washington’s decision to tighten visa requirements for Nigerian applicants.

The new US policy requires Nigerian visa applicants to disclose all social media handles, email addresses, phone numbers, and other online identifiers used within the last five years. The US Mission in Nigeria warned that failure to comply could lead to visa denial and future ineligibility. The Mission explained that this policy is part of efforts to strengthen national security.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the government was briefed ahead of the announcement but stressed that reciprocity would guide Nigeria’s response. “On issues like this, the best we can do is reciprocal action,” Ebienfa stated. “Some US citizens applying for Nigerian visas will be subjected to the same requirements imposed on our nationals.”

An inter-agency meeting involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) will be convened to determine Nigeria’s next steps.

In addition to the visa disclosure policy, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has introduced a stricter “Good Moral Character” requirement for naturalization applicants. This rule expands scrutiny beyond criminal records to cover day-to-day conduct, community involvement, tax compliance, and adherence to US social norms.

These new restrictions follow earlier measures against Nigerians, including the downgrading of most non-immigrant visas to single-entry permits valid for only three months, a move Washington justified under its reciprocity policy.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
