NNPC CEO Reveals Billions Lost Monthly as Nigerian Refineries Struggle with Systemic Failures

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is grappling with staggering financial losses at its refineries, with monthly waste estimated between ₦300 million and ₦500 million. This revelation was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, during a meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Ojulari highlighted that the persistent losses stem from years of neglect and entrenched inefficiencies within the refinery system. He explained that efforts to rehabilitate the facilities have been met with recurring setbacks—repairing one component often leads to the failure of another, making sustainable progress elusive.

Focusing on the Port Harcourt refinery, Ojulari disclosed that while nearly 950,000 barrels were supplied, less than 40 percent of the input was effectively processed. Only half of the refinery was operational, and it was producing mid-grade products rather than premium motor spirit, compounding the financial drain.

He further noted that the original design intended for the old and new refinery sections to function in tandem. However, attempts to revamp only the older section have proven inadequate, preventing the refineries from reaching optimal production and profitability.

Ojulari’s candid assessment underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and strategic investments to restore Nigeria’s refining capacity and halt the ongoing financial hemorrhage.

The rapper, known for her unfiltered honesty, voiced her frustration in a widely circulated video, lamenting the disproportionate attention her activities receive compared to those of her peers.
