A recent Russian drone strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, including two children, according to local officials. The attack occurred on Sunday night, just before a scheduled meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, along with European leaders, at the White House on Monday.
Serhiy Bolvinov, the head of Kharkiv National Police’s investigations unit, reported that five Shahed strike drones hit an apartment building at dawn. “An entire family died in an apartment on the fifth floor,” Bolvinov stated in a Facebook post.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 140 drones and four missiles overnight into Monday morning, with 88 drones reportedly shot down or suppressed. Missile and drone impacts were recorded across 25 locations in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Kyiv regions. Zaporizhzhia Gov. Ivan Fedorov also reported at least three deaths and 23 injuries from missile strikes in the southern region.

President Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a “demonstrative and cynical Russian strike,” suggesting it was timed to coincide with the meeting in Washington aimed at ending the war. He emphasized the need for assistance to stop the killings, reliable security guarantees, and ensuring Russia receives no reward for the conflict. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, echoed these sentiments, stating that “Russia continues to deliberately kill civilians.”
This latest attack follows a record-breaking month in July, during which Russia launched 6,443 drones and missiles into Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian air force. The United Nations reported that July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since May 2022, with at least 286 deaths and 1,388 injuries.
While the scale of Russian strikes has diminished somewhat in August, with 1,344 drone and 27 missile launches recorded as of Monday, the recent attack underscores the ongoing threat to civilian populations. Russia’s Defense Ministry claims to have downed 1,740 Ukrainian drones in August.
The ongoing conflict continues to claim lives and cause widespread destruction, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution. The meeting between Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy is anticipated to address potential paths toward de-escalation and a lasting peace agreement.
