Tragedy in Ryazan: Gunpowder Factory Blast Kills 11, Injures 130

A devastating explosion rocked the Elastik gunpowder and ammunition factory in Russia’s Ryazan region on Saturday, leaving at least 11 people dead and 130 injured. The blast, which occurred in the Shilovsky District about 250 kilometers southeast of Moscow, has plunged the region into mourning and raised fresh concerns about industrial safety in Russia’s manufacturing sector.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, working tirelessly around the clock to clear debris and assist the injured. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed the death toll and shared images of the extensive damage, with twisted metal and shattered buildings marking the aftermath of the explosion.

While the official cause of the fire and subsequent blast remains unknown, independent media have identified the facility as a gunpowder plant. The Ryazan region has previously been targeted by Ukrainian drones, given its strategic military and economic infrastructure, though no direct link has been established in this incident.

This is not the first tragedy at the Elastik factory. In 2021, a similar blast claimed 17 lives, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by workers in Russia’s industrial plants. Fatal accidents are, unfortunately, not uncommon, and the ongoing war in Ukraine has only increased the pressure on ammunition factories, making these environments even more hazardous.

In response to the tragedy, Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov declared a day of mourning. “Flags will be lowered on the territory of the whole region,” he announced, as the community comes together to honor those lost.

The explosion comes at a tense time for Russia, with the war in Ukraine now in its fourth year. Just a day before the blast, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with US President Donald Trump in Alaska for peace talks. While no agreement was reached, both leaders described the discussions as productive.

As Ryazan mourns, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for improved safety standards in high-risk industries.

Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case stemming from a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for three days before finding the rapper not guilty on all five federal felony counts. Lil Durk had been accused of orchestrating a revenge plot against Tyquian Bowman (Quando Rondo) following the 2020 killing of Banks’ friend, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett. Prosecutors alleged Banks planned, ordered, and financed the operation, which ultimately led to the death of Bowman’s cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, during an ambush on August 19, 2022.

The defense maintained Lil Durk’s innocence, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was responsible for the alleged scheme. Banks was arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two murder-for-hire-related counts. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but acquitted of other charges.

Following the verdict, supporters celebrated outside the Los Angeles courthouse. Defense lawyer Drew Findling stated that Banks was “thankful” for the acquittal.

Despite this acquittal, the 33-year-old rapper, who has achieved significant commercial success with seven top-five albums since 2019 and collaborations with artists like Drake and J. Cole, remains in custody. He faces a separate federal trial next month on racketeering, murder, and firearms charges, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted.
