Quick Summary:
President Bola Tinubu decorates Tunji Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun at the State House, Abuja.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony held at the State House, Abuja.

The event took place at 4 p.m. in the President’s office, marking the formal transition of leadership within the Nigeria Police Force.

Key Officials Attend the Ceremony

Present at the ceremony were:

  • National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu
  • Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila
  • Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume
  • Immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun

President Tinubu personally pinned the new insignia on Disu’s uniform and commended Egbetokun for his service and dedication to national security.

Disu’s Appointment and Tenure

Disu’s appointment came 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

However, under the amended Police Act, which grants Inspectors-General of Police a four-year tenure regardless of age, Disu may remain in office until 2030.

Egbetokun’s Exit

The ceremony followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who submitted his letter to the President on Tuesday, citing family issues requiring his undivided attention.

Tinubu praised Egbetokun’s commitment and professionalism, describing his tenure as one that strengthened institutional discipline within the police force.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
