OyegunAttackWarning2026 as former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun warns those behind alleged assassination attempt on him, Peter Obi, and ADC members are “playing with fire.”
John Odigie-Oyegun, former Edo State governor and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned that those allegedly involved in the attempted assassination on him, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other party stakeholders are “playing with fire.”
Oyegun cautioned that such actions could trigger consequences far more damaging than anticipated, describing the incident as a reckless escalation of political hostility.
Gunmen Attack During ADC Event in Benin
The reported attack occurred in Benin City, Edo State, during an event marking the official defection of senior lawyer Olumide Akpata to the ADC.
Gunmen allegedly invaded Oyegun’s residence, firing shots and targeting party loyalists and members of the Obidient Movement.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the venue in multiple vehicles, shooting indiscriminately and leaving several people injured before escaping.
Security Alert and Narrow Escape
Speaking with reporters after the incident, Oyegun revealed that security operatives had alerted organizers mid-event about a possible assault, prompting them to abruptly end the gathering.
He added that the decision to end the event early likely prevented a tragedy, as gunfire erupted shortly after their departure.
Criticism of Security Coordination
Oyegun faulted what he described as poor collaboration among security agencies, questioning the state government’s capacity to protect lives and property.
He stressed that citizen safety remains the primary duty of government, warning that continued negligence could have grave national implications.
Rising Political Tension
The incident adds to growing political tension surrounding the ADC’s activities in Edo State, following recent reports of attacks on opposition figures and heightened security concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party officials have called for a comprehensive investigation into the attack and urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
