Quick Summary:
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, calls on Southwest residents to hold their governors responsible for rising insecurity in the region.
The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Lere Olayinka, has charged the people of the Southwest to hold their governors accountable for the growing insecurity in the region.
Olayinka accused the governors of playing politics of emotion and sentiment with the issue of insecurity, warning that such an approach would not solve the region’s security challenges.
Background: Oyo Kidnapping Incident
His comments follow the recent abduction of primary school students and teachers from the LA School and Community Grammar School in Ahoro-Esinele, located in Ogbomosho and Orire Local Government Areas of Oyo State.
In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-level federal delegation led by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to the affected communities.
“Fayose Did Not Wait For Buhari” — Olayinka
Olayinka contrasted the current situation with the approach of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, who, according to him, took decisive action against kidnappers during his tenure.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Olayinka wrote that Fayose mobilised local hunters and security personnel, including soldiers, to combat insecurity in Ekiti State.
He added that Fayose also enacted laws banning open grazing, ensuring that Fulani herders were not allowed to enter the state at night and that cattle rearers were properly identified.
Example From Orin Ekiti
Olayinka recalled an incident in Orin Ekiti Farm Settlement, where a pregnant woman was killed, prompting Fayose to summon Fulani leaders to the Government House.
“Governors Must Be Held Accountable”
Olayinka concluded by urging residents of the Southwest to stop politicising insecurity and instead demand accountability from their governors.
