The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) declares Sunday, June 14, 2026, a nationwide “Black Sunday” to honour victims of terrorism and violence, alongside a three-day national prayer programme.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has designated Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a nationwide “Black Sunday” in honour of victims of terrorist attacks and other forms of violence across the country.

The association also announced a three-day national prayer programme scheduled to run from June 12 to June 14, aimed at seeking divine intervention and unity among Christians amid Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

Okoh: “Prayers Alone Are Not Enough”

Speaking after the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasised that prayers alone would not resolve Nigeria’s security crisis.

He called for urgent and practical measures to restore peace and safety nationwide, warning that the situation had reached a critical level.

Call For State Of Emergency On Insecurity

Archbishop Okoh urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the situation as critical and requiring immediate intervention.

He also advocated the speedy establishment of state police and the decentralisation of Nigeria’s security architecture to enable faster and more effective responses to threats across the country.

Demand For Justice And Release Of Kidnapped Victims

The CAN president further demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims and called on authorities to ensure justice for those affected by insecurity.

He reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to standing with victims and their families, urging churches nationwide to observe the “Black Sunday” as a symbol of solidarity and remembrance.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
