Quick Summary:
PDP leaders fail to agree on consensus candidate for Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency ahead of 2027 elections; meeting adjourned indefinitely.
A meeting of chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened to produce a consensus candidate for the Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections has ended in a stalemate.
The meeting, held on Monday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was attended by about 16 party leaders from Egbeda and Ona Ara local government areas.
It was presided over by a former Minister of Special Duties, Elder Wole Oyelese, and also attended by five aspirants seeking the party’s ticket — four from Ona Ara and one from Egbeda.
Governor Makinde’s Directive
The meeting followed a directive from Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, instructing PDP leaders and aspirants to reach a consensus on a candidate for the constituency.
Makinde reportedly warned that if the stakeholders failed to agree, the matter would be brought before him for resolution on April 15, 2026.
Meeting Ends Inconclusively
According to a source present at the meeting, discussions were initially cordial but later broke down when participants could not agree on a single candidate.
The source added that Elder Oyelese, who chaired the session, adjourned the meeting indefinitely after it became clear that no consensus could be reached.
Next Steps
With the meeting ending inconclusively, party stakeholders are expected to await Governor Makinde’s intervention on the matter later in April.
The Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency remains a key political battleground in Oyo State, and the outcome of the PDP’s internal deliberations is expected to shape the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
