EFCC witness tells FCT High Court that Godwin Emefiele’s naira redesign policy caused hardship for Nigerians, as video evidence shows public frustration.
EmefieleTrialUpdate has revealed new details in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness testified that the naira redesign policy introduced under his leadership brought economic hardship to Nigerians.
The witness, Chinelo Eneanya, an EFCC investigator, appeared before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Thursday as the seventh prosecution witness (PW7) in the case involving alleged procurement fraud.
EFCC Witness Links Naira Redesign to Public Hardship
Led in evidence by prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Eneanya told the court that video evidence tendered during the proceedings showed that the naira redesign policy injured the public and caused widespread frustration.
He explained that the EFCC’s investigation covered documentary, electronic, and audiovisual evidence showing the impact of the policy on citizens and businesses.
Evidence Presented in Court
The prosecution tendered several materials in evidence, including:
- Documents,
- An audio-visual device, and
- A certificate of identification.
Additionally, a certified copy of a bundle of documents tagged “Delivery Notes and Notice of Meeting” was admitted by the court.
The defendant’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), did not object to the tendering of the documents.
Video Evidence Shows Public Frustration
Six video recordings from News Central, Channels Television, Television Continental (TVC), and Arise TV were played in court.
According to Eneanya, the footage depicted widespread frustration among Nigerians struggling to meet daily needs during the cash scarcity crisis that followed the policy’s implementation.
Next Hearing Date
Justice Maryann Anenih adjourned the hearing until November 26 for the continuation of the trial.
The case forms part of the broader investigation into Emefiele’s tenure as CBN Governor, during which the naira redesign policy—introduced in late 2022—sparked nationwide cash shortages and economic disruptions.
