Ebonyi State accident: Six people died and 14 were injured in a tragic crash on the Nkalagu–Enugu Expressway, sparking calls for urgent road safety reforms in Ebonyi State.

A tragic Ebonyi State accident happened on Friday morning near the Nkalagu Flyover along the Nkalagu–Enugu Expressway. A commercial bus crashed into a tipper truck, leaving at least six people dead and 14 others seriously injured.

What Happened?

The Ebonyi State accident took place around 9:40 a.m. It involved a white Toyota Hiace bus and a Mercedes-Benz 911 tipper truck. According to Anthony Ogbodo, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, there were 22 people in the bus10 women and 12 men.

Six people—three men and three women—died at the scene. Fourteen others were badly hurt. Two men were lucky and escaped without any injuries.

Why Did the Accident Happen?

The FRSC said the Ebonyi State accident was caused by dangerous overtaking on the busy expressway. Ogbodo explained that their patrol team got a distress call at 9:45 a.m. and arrived at the scene within five minutes. This quick response helped prevent more casualties.

Rescue and Medical Help

FRSC officers and the Nigerian Red Cross quickly helped the victims of the Ebonyi State accident. Those with serious injuries were taken to Annunciation Hospital and the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu. Others were treated at Ezzamgbo General Hospital in Ebonyi.

The FRSC also cleared the wreckage quickly to reduce traffic jams. Items found at the scene included two small Itel phones, a vehicle key, and ₦2,000 in cash.

Warning to Drivers

Ogbodo warned drivers about the dangers of reckless driving. He said,
“This tragic incident is a painful reminder that impatience and dangerous overtaking remain deadly habits. Drivers must value human life above speed or time.”

Public Reaction

The Ebonyi State accident has made many people angry and worried. Residents are asking the federal and state governments to make the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway safer, especially near the Nkalagu area.

A local resident, Emmanuel Eze, posted on Facebook, asking Governor Francis Nwifuru and Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to remove the concrete barriers in the middle of the road. He believes these barriers make accidents worse because drivers can’t swerve to avoid crashes.

“We are losing too many lives. The road should be made safer for everyone—not just for government convoys,” Eze wrote.

What Happens Next?

So far, government officials have not responded to these calls for change. However, after this Ebonyi State accident, more people are demanding better road safety, improved road design, and stricter traffic rules.

This tragic Ebonyi State accident is a reminder of how important it is to drive safely and for authorities to make our roads safer for everyone.

The rapper, known for her unfiltered honesty, voiced her frustration in a widely circulated video, lamenting the disproportionate attention her activities receive compared to those of her peers.
