Quick Summary:
More than 20 people, including fish farmers and wood loggers, are killed in a Boko Haram attack near Hambagda, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, after a landmine explosion and subsequent gunfire.

At least 20 people, including fish farmers and wood loggers, have been killed and several others injured in a fresh Boko Haram attack on Hambagda, a community a few kilometres from Gwoza town in Borno State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday morning when a landmine, suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram terrorists, exploded on the outskirts of Gwoza Local Government Area.

Explosion Followed By Gunfire

According to the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), the incident happened around 11 a.m., when a group of loggers and fish farmers were working in the area.

The source added that after the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated, the terrorists opened fire on fleeing civilians, killing and injuring many.

Bodies Recovered, Death Toll May Rise

Reports from local vigilantes and residents indicate that about 18 bodies have so far been recovered from the scene and surrounding communities near Gwoza town.

Authorities warned that the death toll could rise, as several people remain missing following the attack.

Many of the victims were loggers and farmers who had gone to the area to gather firewood and fish to support their families.

Renewed Security Concerns In Gwoza

Residents said the attackers appeared to be moving through the area in a series of violent raids, sparking fresh fears over security in farming communities as the planting season approaches.

The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in parts of southern Borno, despite ongoing military operations in the region.

Security analysts have warned that the resurgence of attacks on rural communities could disrupt agricultural activities and worsen humanitarian conditions in the state.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
