The African Democratic Congress urges President Tinubu to explain the sudden overhaul of Nigeria’s military leadership amid rumours of instability.

ADCPressesTinubu has become a trending political issue as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) called on President Bola Tinubu to provide clear and transparent explanations for the recent sweeping changes in the leadership of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, acknowledged that while the president has the constitutional authority to appoint and remove service chiefs, the abrupt nature and timing of the decision have generated public unease.

ADC Raises Concerns Over Sudden Military Changes

Abdullahi described the mass replacement of senior military leaders as “worrisome,” particularly amid rumours of an attempted coup. He criticized the government’s handling of the situation, saying it has lacked transparency and consistency.

He noted that many of the affected officers were appointed only about 28 months ago, with the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff having served barely a year as Chief of Army Staff before his elevation.

Call for Transparency and Stability

The ADC spokesperson stressed that the federal government owes Nigerians a detailed explanation of the circumstances surrounding the changes, warning that a lack of transparency could erode public confidence in both the military and the administration.

He expressed concern that Nigeria cannot afford internal instability, especially given the recent turmoil in neighbouring Chad and other Sahel nations.

Criticism of Tinubu’s Focus

Abdullahi accused the Tinubu administration of being distracted, arguing that insecurity continues to spread while the government appears preoccupied with politics rather than governance.

ADC’s Call for Reassurance

The ADC reaffirmed its call for the government to address Nigerians openly about the situation and provide assurances that the nation’s democracy and territorial integrity remain secure.

The party emphasized that transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust and stability within the armed forces.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
