Summary:
A major air disaster was narrowly avoided on Friday night when a Qatar Airways flight suffered a mid-air technical failure over Nigerian airspace. The pilots successfully executed an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, allowing 260 passengers and crew to disembark safely amidst a high-alert response from Lagos emergency teams.
A potentially catastrophic event was averted late Friday night at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, following a distress call from a Qatar Airways vessel. The aircraft, carrying a total of 260 souls—comprising 248 passengers and 12 crew members—was forced to execute an emergency landing after encountering a critical technical fault while airborne.
Mid-Air Distress and Rapid Response
The situation unfolded rapidly within Nigerian airspace when the flight crew signaled a malfunction to the control tower. Upon receiving the distress alert, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) immediately activated its disaster response protocols.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the agency’s Command and Control Centre in Alausa mobilized instantly. Ground teams, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), were dispatched to the runway, placing the airport on high alert to mitigate any potential disaster.
A Safe Resolution
Witnesses at the terminal described a tense atmosphere as emergency vehicles flanked the tarmac. Fortunately, the pilots demonstrated exceptional professionalism, guiding the distressed aircraft to a safe touchdown.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was technical issues suffered by the distressed aircraft,” the LASEMA report stated.
Following the landing, the aircraft was taxied to the apron for a comprehensive inspection by engineering teams. Authorities confirmed that all evacuation procedures were conducted smoothly.
Official Confirmation
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has acknowledged the incident. NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu confirmed that an “air return” had occurred, noting that further details would be released pending a full review.
LASEMA has since confirmed that the recovery operation is concluded, with no injuries or casualties reported, and the aircraft has been secured for repairs.
