Quick Summary:
Oyo State Fire Service prevents a major fire disaster after a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of fuel overturned along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, saving lives and property.

The Oyo State Fire Service Agency on Thursday successfully averted a major fire disaster following a petrol tanker accident at the Flower Mill area, Toll Gate, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan.

According to the agency, a distress call was received at 9:06 a.m. on February 12, 2026, reporting that a tanker carrying petrol had lost control and overturned on the highway.

A team of firefighters, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adesina, was immediately dispatched to the scene.

45,000 Litres of Petrol Contained Safely

Upon arrival, the crew discovered a DAF trailer tanker loaded with approximately 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lying overturned and leaking fuel onto the road.

The firefighters swiftly applied foam chemical compounds to neutralise the petrol and prevent ignition, successfully averting what could have been a catastrophic explosion.

No casualties were recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were protected due to the timely intervention.

Traffic disruptions caused by the accident were later cleared, and normal vehicular movement was restored.

Security and Emergency Coordination

Security during the operation was provided by the Nigerian Police (Toll Gate Division) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Oluyole Division.

The fire team concluded the operation at 4:04 p.m. and returned to base, remaining on standby for further emergencies.

Government Urges Caution and Preparedness

Reacting to the incident, Hon. (Dr) Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, commended the firefighters for their professionalism and urged motorists to drive cautiously on highways.

He emphasized the importance of equipping vehicles with fire extinguishers to contain small fires before they escalate.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
