NSCDC and TETFund Partner to Fortify Nigeria’s Educational Security Architecture

Summary:
As school attacks decline, the NSCDC seeks to cement gains through a strategic partnership with TETFund aimed at infrastructure upgrades and capacity building. This move targets the critical security deficit in over 60,000 Nigerian schools while leveraging increased education tax funding.

In a significant move to overhaul the safety mechanisms within Nigeria’s academic environment, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has initiated a strategic collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This partnership aims to bridge the widening gap between security personnel availability and the infrastructure needed to protect students nationwide.

Consolidating Gains in School Safety
During a high-level diplomatic visit to the TETFund headquarters on Thursday, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof Ahmed Abubakar Audi, provided a critical assessment of the nation’s security landscape. While acknowledging that the frequency of school attacks has notably decreased compared to the volatile era of the early 2000s and the Chibok tragedy, Audi warned against complacency.

He attributed the relative calm to successful interventions like the Safe School Initiative but emphasized that “pockets of insecurity” remain, necessitating a “whole-of-society approach” rather than a unilateral security response.

The Infrastructure Deficit
The Commandant General presented sobering statistics that underscore the vulnerability of the education sector. A recent survey revealed that out of over 81,000 schools across Nigeria, a staggering 60,000 lack basic security infrastructure, such as perimeter fencing and armed guards.

With a total workforce of approximately 63,000 personnel, the NSCDC faces a logistical impossibility in manning every institution. “Even if we deploy one officer per school… it will still not be enough,” Audi explained, framing the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TETFund as a necessary step to upgrade training facilities and multiply force effectiveness through technology and capacity building.

TETFund’s Financial Commitment
Responding to the proposal, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, expressed readiness to institutionalize the partnership. He commended the visionary leadership of the Corps and affirmed that security is the bedrock of successful educational delivery.

Echono revealed that under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, TETFund has witnessed a revenue surge of over 100 percent in Education Tax collections. This financial boost positions the agency to effectively support the NSCDC in upgrading its training colleges, including the College of Security Management in Abeokuta, thereby ensuring that the protectors of Nigeria’s future are world-class professionals.

The rapper, known for her unfiltered honesty, voiced her frustration in a widely circulated video, lamenting the disproportionate attention her activities receive compared to those of her peers.
