Quick Summary:
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announces arrival of 24 new train cars to boost capacity, reduce wait times, and enhance efficiency on the Lagos Red Line.
The Lagos State Government has taken delivery of an additional set of 24-car trains to strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line and expand passenger capacity along the corridor.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Thursday, noting that the new rolling stock will improve service efficiency and significantly reduce waiting times for commuters as the state continues to invest in rail transportation.
Red Line: A Backbone Of Lagos Rail Network
The Lagos Red Line, inaugurated in February 2024, spans approximately 37 kilometres, linking Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo on Lagos Island.
The route passes through major districts such as Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, providing a vital mass transit option across some of the state’s busiest corridors.
Developed under the Lagos Rail Master Plan, the Red Line operates alongside the standard gauge track of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and connects with the Lagos Blue Line at designated interchange points.
This integration supports the state’s vision of a multimodal transport system combining rail, road, and water networks.
Growing Patronage And Future Expansion
Since its inauguration, the Red Line has recorded increasing passenger patronage, reflecting the rising demand for faster and more reliable alternatives to road transport in Lagos, a city long affected by traffic congestion.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to expand rail services and improve connectivity across the state.
Authorities are also exploring plans to extend the Red Line beyond its current endpoints and integrate it with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and water transport systems, further enhancing mobility and accessibility.
