Quick Summary:
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo urges domestic airlines to suspend plans to increase airfares or halt operations following a 300% surge in aviation fuel prices.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has appealed to domestic airlines to shelve plans to increase airfares or suspend operations following the sharp rise in the price of aviation fuel, Jet A1, which has climbed from N900 to over N3,000 per litre.

The minister’s intervention came after the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) threatened to halt flights next week over the escalating cost of Jet A1, which has surged by more than 300 percent in less than two months.

Keyamo Commends Airlines’ Resilience

In a letter dated April 16, 2026, addressed to the airline body, Keyamo acknowledged the operational challenges confronting the aviation sector, particularly the spike in fuel prices.

He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regards aviation as a critical national asset, vital to trade, national security, employment, and economic integration.

Minister Urges Restraint On Fare Hike

While recognizing the financial strain on operators, Keyamo urged airlines to exercise restraint in transferring the cost burden to passengers.

He also cautioned against suspending flight operations, warning that such a move would disrupt the economy and undermine public confidence.

Emergency Stakeholders’ Meeting Scheduled

Keyamo assured airline operators that the federal government is taking their concerns seriously and will act swiftly to address the crisis.

He announced that an emergency stakeholders’ meeting has been scheduled for April 22, 2026, in Abuja, to find a prompt, practical, and sustainable resolution to the aviation fuel crisis.

Airlines Threaten Shutdown

Reports indicate that airline services may be grounded next week if the government fails to intervene. Members of the Airline Operators of Nigeria have warned that they may shut down operations or massively increase ticket prices to offset rising fuel costs.

The situation has raised concerns about potential disruptions to domestic travel, supply chains, and business operations across the country.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
