Imo LP Faction Warns Members Against Unauthorized Congresses

Quick Summary:
Callistus Ihejiagwa-led Labour Party faction cautions members against participating in alleged illegal congresses scheduled by rival leadership.

The Imo State factional leadership of the Labour Party (LP), led by Callistus Ihejiagwa, has warned members not to participate in any party activity not authorized by its leadership.

The warning follows reports of an alleged plan by the Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha-led group to conduct Ward, LGA, and State Congresses beginning March 26, 2026, which the faction described as illegal and unconstitutional.

Ihejiagwa said the move was an attempt to undermine existing party structures, stressing that the faction’s leadership remains the legally recognized executive in the state.

INEC Letter Cited as Legal Basis

According to Ihejiagwa, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in a letter dated February 16, 2026, declined to approve the purported dissolution of LP’s State, LGA, and Ward Executive Committees across the federation.

He argued that since INEC did not invalidate the congresses conducted under his leadership, any subsequent meetings or congresses remain legally unsustainable.

He added that any National Executive Council (NEC) meeting not convened in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act is null and void, regardless of INEC’s attendance.

Alleged Breach of Electoral Act

Ihejiagwa further argued that the proposed congresses violate the 21-day statutory notice requirement under the Electoral Act, noting that the purported NEC meeting of March 17, 2026, failed to meet this condition.

He also said the Usman-led group had not transmitted the party’s membership register to INEC as required by law.

Existing Executives Remain Valid

Ihejiagwa reaffirmed that the State, LGA, and Ward Executives elected during INEC-monitored congresses held on December 2, 4, and 6, 2025, remain valid and subsisting.

He warned that any attempt to replace the existing structures amounts to an unlawful subversion of democratic processes within the party.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
