Nigeria Awaits FIFA Verdict on DR Congo Player Eligibility Dispute

Quick Summary:
Nigeria challenges DR Congo’s use of allegedly ineligible players in the 2026 World Cup playoffs, with the NSC claiming a strong case while reports conflict on whether FIFA has already dismissed the protest.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that Nigeria has a “strong and very tight” legal case before FIFA concerning the eligibility of several DR Congo players who featured in the 2026 World Cup playoffs.

The controversy stems from Nigeria’s penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in November 2025, which ended the Super Eagles’ qualification hopes on the field. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) subsequently filed a formal petition to FIFA, alleging that some Congolese players did not meet eligibility criteria under DR Congo’s domestic laws, which reportedly prohibit dual nationality.

Nigeria’s Position

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko emphasized that the petition is not about being a “sore loser” but about upholding the integrity of the rules.

He referenced a recent FIFA precedent in which Malaysia was sanctioned for similar eligibility violations, arguing that DR Congo may have misrepresented information to secure player clearances.

The NFF specifically cited players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who allegedly retain European passports, as examples of potential breaches of Congolese nationality laws.

Dikko stated that Nigeria’s case rests on the principle that national eligibility must align with both FIFA statutes and domestic legal frameworks, and that any misrepresentation constitutes grounds for disciplinary action.

DR Congo’s Defense

The Congolese Football Federation (Fecofa) has dismissed Nigeria’s claims, maintaining that all players were vetted and approved by FIFA before the playoff match.

Fecofa insists that FIFA’s regulations on sporting nationality take precedence over domestic nationality restrictions, and that the players in question fully complied with international eligibility standards.

The Congolese side has described Nigeria’s protest as “baseless and politically motivated,” asserting that the match result should stand.

Conflicting Reports on FIFA’s Decision

The situation remains unclear, with conflicting reports emerging about FIFA’s handling of the case.

  • Sources close to the NFF claim that FIFA is still investigating and that Nigeria’s petition remains under active review, raising hopes that the match could be overturned.
  • However, other reports suggest that FIFA has already dismissed the protest, ruling that DR Congo complied with all regulatory requirements and that the original result stands.

As of now, FIFA has not issued an official public statement, leaving fans and officials in a state of uncertainty.

Potential Outcomes

If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favor, possible sanctions against DR Congo could include:

  • Fines or disciplinary penalties for administrative misconduct.
  • Forfeiture of the match, which could reinstate Nigeria into the intercontinental playoff round.

However, until a formal verdict is released, the original result remains valid, with DR Congo preparing for the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal has been thrown into uncertainty after his sister, Elma Aveiro, suggested that he may not represent the national team again.

Ronaldo was suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation after reportedly leaving the team camp during the UEFA Nations League. The Al Nassr forward was said to be angry with head coach Jorge Jesus after remaining on the bench during Portugal’s match against Croatia.

The dispute escalated when Ronaldo accused Jesus of “betrayal.” Aveiro has now indicated that the disagreement may be difficult to resolve.

Asked whether Ronaldo would return to the national team, she replied: “It’s more likely a NO than a YES. I think they’re both hurt. The situation has stalled.”

She added: “When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal.”

The comments have raised further questions about whether Portugal’s captain has made his final international appearance.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended football fan Jamilu Murtala from all league activities with immediate effect, citing continued threats to the safety of match officials and visiting teams.

The decision followed a complaint from Ranchers Bees, who currently use the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano as their temporary home ground. The club raised concerns over Murtala’s access to restricted areas of the pitch during their home fixtures, reportedly facilitated by the host state football association.

Ranchers Bees also dissociated themselves from Murtala, describing his conduct as disruptive and a recurring nuisance during their matches.

In response, the NPFL has barred him from league grounds to promote order and ensure the safety of all participants. Ranchers Bees will visit Ibadan on Sunday to face Shooting Stars, while their next home fixture is scheduled against Doma United on Sunday, 25 October 2026.

Lisandro Martinez is reportedly considering ending his time at Manchester United following criticism directed at the club’s technical director, Jason Wilcox.

United’s difficult run continued on Tuesday, when they suffered a 2–0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The result marked their fifth consecutive match without a victory. After the game, Martinez openly expressed his frustration during a post-match exchange.

According to The Athletic, his comments have raised further questions about his future at Old Trafford. The Argentina international is entering the final year of his contract, although United retain the option to extend the agreement by an additional season.

Despite that provision, Martinez reportedly has no interest in prolonging his stay with the club. He is said to be keen on securing a future transfer to La Liga, potentially bringing his Manchester United career to an early conclusion.
