Quick Summary:
FCT Police Command appeals to the NLC and TUC to postpone their planned solidarity protest, citing intelligence reports of possible infiltration by non-state actors.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to postpone their planned protest in Abuja, citing security concerns.

The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, was announced by the FCT chapters of the NLC and TUC in a joint statement signed by Benson Upah, General Secretary of the NLC, and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the TUC.

The demonstration is intended as a solidarity action in support of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), which is leading a strike by Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) workers over unpaid salaries and benefits.

Police Cite Threat of Infiltration

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said intelligence reports indicated plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes “inimical to public peace and security.”

She explained that the measure aims to prevent any breakdown of law and order while ensuring that the rights of other residents to safety, movement, and lawful activities are protected.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Public Safety

The FCT Police Command assured residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and security across the capital.

Background to the Labour Dispute

The FCDA workers’ strike, led by JUAC, has created tension between the unions and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, as workers demand payment of outstanding entitlements and improved welfare conditions.

The planned protest was intended to draw government attention to the workers’ grievances, but the police have now advised caution to avert potential security breaches.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
