The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun an investigation into eight suspected oil thieves arrested by the Nigerian Navy in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Commission announced the development on its official X handle, confirming that the suspects were handed over by the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder on March 23, 2026.
According to the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended on March 22 by the Navy’s Anti-Crude Oil Theft team during a patrol around Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo areas of the state.
Navy Intercepts Boats with 44,000 Litres of Illegal Diesel
The suspects were reportedly caught with two wooden boats conveying about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
Lt. Commander J.J. Jerome, representing the Naval Base Commander, said the operation was based on intelligence reports about illegal refining activities in the area.
He added that armed escorts fled upon sighting the naval team, while eight suspects were arrested.
Jerome noted that the handover to the EFCC was conducted in line with established procedures for prosecuting maritime-related offences.
EFCC Commends Navy, Vows Prosecution
Receiving the suspects, Chioma Emerole, an EFCC official, commended the Nigerian Navy for its strong collaboration in combating economic and environmental crimes.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to curbing oil theft, describing it as a major economic sabotage undermining Nigeria’s revenue and environmental safety.
