Tensions are rising at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government: meet the union’s demands by August 28 or face a fresh round of industrial action. The announcement was made by Professor Louis Omenyi, the branch chairperson, during a press briefing on campus.

ASUU’s grievances center on the government’s persistent failure to honor agreements reached over the years. The union’s demands include the immediate signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, payment of three months’ outstanding salaries, release of withheld third-party deductions under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), and settlement of promotion arrears. Additionally, ASUU is calling for the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) into salaries, protection of university autonomy, and withdrawal from compulsory involvement in the Students’ Loan Scheme under the Tertiary Institutions Students Support Fund (TISSF).

Professor Omenyi also condemned the alleged victimisation of ASUU members at several universities, including Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University, and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. He stressed that the union has exhausted all avenues for dialogue and consultation, warning that continued neglect would leave them no choice but to strike.

ASUU’s history of industrial action has repeatedly disrupted academic calendars nationwide, with previous strikes lasting up to nine months. Stakeholders now fear that another strike could further destabilize Nigeria’s public university system, leaving millions of students in limbo.

The union has called on Nigerians, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and civil society groups to urge the government to act swiftly and avert another nationwide shutdown of academic activities.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
