Quick Summary:
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun reveals his role in Gbenga Daniel’s 2003 and 2023 victories, accuses the senator of media attacks, and declares intention to contest the Ogun East Senate seat in 2027.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed that he played a key role in the political rise of Senator Gbenga Daniel, including his 2003 gubernatorial victory and 2023 election as senator for Ogun East under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at an APC stakeholders meeting held at his Iperu Remo residence on Tuesday night, Abiodun also announced his intention to contest the Ogun East Senate seat in 2027.
A video of the meeting, which has since gone viral, captured the governor addressing party leaders and supporters.
“I Helped Daniel Become Governor And Senator”
Abiodun recounted his political history with Daniel, revealing that after losing the 2003 governorship ticket to him on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, he handed over his political structure to support Daniel’s victory.
He added that he also intervened in 2023 to help Daniel secure the APC senatorial ticket, persuading Prince Segun Adesegun and Senator Lekan Mustapha to step down their ambitions.
Rift Between Abiodun And Daniel
The governor accused Daniel of sponsoring negative publicity and media attacks against him despite their long-standing political relationship.
The remarks come amid growing tension within the Ogun APC, following reports that Daniel purchased the party’s nomination form to seek re-election, despite a recent caucus meeting in Ijebu-Ode where party leaders adopted Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial District.
Promise Of Quality Representation
Abiodun assured party members that he would provide effective and visible representation if elected to the Senate.
He pledged not to be a “back bencher”, promising to champion development initiatives for the district.
