Landmark Healthcare Legislation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed into law the ‘University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bill’ after completing its third reading on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

The new law aims to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by addressing the shortage of medical professionals and promoting indigenous research and innovation in health sciences.

Lawmakers including Adams Noheem, Mojeed Fatai, and Richard Kasunmu presided over the final legislative stages. The bill will now be transmitted to the Governor for assent.

Lawmakers React to Rising Insecurity

The legislative session was overshadowed by discussions on worsening insecurity across the country. Members of the House observed a one-minute silence for victims of recent violent incidents.

Speaker Dr. Mudasiru Obasa expressed deep sorrow over the killing of an Army General, describing it as a disturbing escalation of violence targeting senior officials.

Lawmakers also condemned the abduction of schoolchildren in Kebbi State and the church killing in Ekiti State, calling for urgent government intervention and enhanced security measures.

The House resolved to write formally to the state government and military authorities, urging intensified efforts to combat the growing wave of insecurity nationwide.

Commemoration of Men’s and Children’s Days

Amid the serious deliberations, the House also marked International Men’s Day and International Children’s Day, both celebrated on the same date.

Omolara Olumegbon, representing Lagos Island, initiated the commemoration, calling for recognition of men’s contributions to family and society.
“Man is not by power nor by being a leader, but by securing the family,” she said, commending men for their resilience and dedication.

Aro Moshood lamented that men are often overlooked on this day, urging them to take pride in celebrating themselves.
Stephen Ogundipe added that children rarely acknowledge the sacrifices of fathers and proposed that the House consider a formal law to institutionalize the celebration of men’s roles.

In his closing remarks, Speaker Obasa defined true manhood as leadership, truthfulness, and responsibility.
“A good man is not by money or wealth; it is one who does the right things,” he stated, urging men to remain role models and thanking women for their support.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
