Quick Summary:
Residents of Gashish in Kassa District, Barkin Ladi LGA, Plateau State, protest repeated killings and attacks by bandits, accusing soldiers of failing to protect them despite a military checkpoint in the area.

Thousands of angry residents of Gashish in Kassa District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday, took to the streets to protest incessant attacks and killings by terrorists and bandits despite the presence of soldiers and a military checkpoint in the area.

The protesters, comprising youths, men, and women, reportedly destroyed the military checkpoint and demanded the immediate withdrawal of soldiers from their communities, accusing them of failing to protect residents from repeated assaults by suspected Fulani gunmen.

Protesters Accuse Soldiers Of Negligence

According to the protesters, the soldiers have failed to respond to distress calls during attacks, only arriving after the violence to arrest innocent residents instead of confronting the assailants.

One of the protest leaders, Mercy Dachung, expressed frustration over the continued killings despite the military presence.

Another youth leader, Dung Peter, accused the security forces of ineffectiveness or complicity in the ongoing violence.

Residents Express Loss Of Confidence

Another protester, Ibrahim John, lamented the community’s long-standing suffering at the hands of attackers identified as Fulani herdsmen, saying residents have lost confidence in the military.

The protesters accused the authorities of failing to protect rural communities in Southern Plateau, where banditry and communal attacks have persisted despite multiple security deployments.

Military Yet To Respond

Efforts to obtain comments from the Media Information Officer of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), Captain Polycarp Oteh, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages sent to his WhatsApp platform.

The protest highlights growing public frustration over insecurity in Plateau State, where recurring attacks have displaced thousands and left many communities vulnerable despite ongoing military operations.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
