The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved a set of palliative measures for public servants in the state, including a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 transport allowance, to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices and the increased cost of living.
The initiative, which will run for three months beginning in April 2026, aims to ease the burden on workers struggling with high transportation costs following the recent hike in fuel pump prices.
Details Of The Palliative Package
In a statement issued by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the government announced that each eligible worker will:
- Observe one day off duty per week
- Receive a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance during the three-month period
Onasanya explained that the measure is designed to provide relief for commuting challenges while promoting greater productivity through a motivated workforce.
Exempted Categories Of Workers
Certain categories of workers will be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their duties. These include:
- Medical personnel
- Judicial staff
- Teaching and non-teaching staff across all levels of education
- Security personnel
- Accounting Officers and Heads of Departments
- Other officers whose roles require physical presence
Despite the exemption, all affected workers will still receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance.
Implementation And Oversight
The Head of Service stated that Accounting Officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will determine the specific day off for eligible workers in a way that ensures uninterrupted service delivery.
Onasanya described the intervention as timely and thoughtful, commending Governor Abiodun for prioritising workers’ welfare amid current economic challenges.
He urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture through renewed commitment, discipline, and improved service delivery.
Commitment To Workforce Welfare
The palliative measures reflect the Ogun State Government’s commitment to supporting its workforce and maintaining efficiency in public service despite prevailing economic pressures.
Governor Abiodun’s administration continues to position worker welfare as a central pillar of its governance and economic resilience strategy.
