U.S. Resumes ISR Flights Over Sambisa Forest After Sokoto Airstrikes

Quick Summary:
U.S. forces resume near-daily surveillance missions over Borno State’s Sambisa Forest following the December 25 Sokoto airstrikes, focusing on ISWAP strongholds and regional counterterrorism objectives.

Following the precision airstrikes in Sokoto on December 25, 2025, U.S. forces have reportedly resumed Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) flights over the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, signaling a renewed phase of counterterrorism coordination between the United States and Nigeria.

The operations mark a strategic shift from the North-Western theater to the North-East, where ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) maintains entrenched strongholds.

Key Operational Details

Targeted Region

While the recent kinetic strikes were concentrated in the North-West, current ISR missions are focused on ISWAP positions within the Sambisa Forest and the Timbuktu Triangle, areas long regarded as insurgent command zones.

Aircraft & Logistics

Flight-tracking data indicates that a Gulfstream V aircraft, operated by Tenax Aerospace on behalf of the U.S. military, has been conducting these surveillance missions.
The aircraft typically operates from Accra, Ghana, which serves as a regional logistics and refueling hub for U.S. operations in West Africa.

Multiple Objectives

In addition to monitoring terrorist movements, the ISR flights are reportedly gathering intelligence to locate an American pilot believed to have been kidnapped in neighboring Niger.
The missions are also intended to support Nigerian ground operations and enhance situational awareness across the Lake Chad Basin.

Frequency

After a one-day operational pause following the Sokoto strikes, surveillance flights have resumed on a near-daily basis as of December 28, 2025, reflecting a sustained intelligence posture in the region.

Strategic Context

The renewed ISR activity comes amid calls from Nigerian lawmakers, including Senator Ali Ndume, urging both nations to extend joint kinetic operations to the North-East, where ISWAP and Boko Haram factions remain active.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously described the Sokoto mission as the “first fulfillment” of a broader commitment to work aggressively with Nigeria against jihadist networks across the Sahel and Lake Chad regions.

Analysts view the resumed flights as part of a wider U.S.–Nigeria counterterrorism framework, combining precision intelligence, localized ground operations, and regional coordination to disrupt extremist movements.

Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case stemming from a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for three days before finding the rapper not guilty on all five federal felony counts. Lil Durk had been accused of orchestrating a revenge plot against Tyquian Bowman (Quando Rondo) following the 2020 killing of Banks’ friend, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett. Prosecutors alleged Banks planned, ordered, and financed the operation, which ultimately led to the death of Bowman’s cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, during an ambush on August 19, 2022.

The defense maintained Lil Durk’s innocence, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was responsible for the alleged scheme. Banks was arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two murder-for-hire-related counts. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but acquitted of other charges.

Following the verdict, supporters celebrated outside the Los Angeles courthouse. Defense lawyer Drew Findling stated that Banks was “thankful” for the acquittal.

Despite this acquittal, the 33-year-old rapper, who has achieved significant commercial success with seven top-five albums since 2019 and collaborations with artists like Drake and J. Cole, remains in custody. He faces a separate federal trial next month on racketeering, murder, and firearms charges, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted.
