Quick Summary:
Nigeria and the United States sign a $5.1 billion five-year health cooperation agreement, targeting major diseases and strengthening bilateral ties after resolving a diplomatic rift.

Nigeria and the United States have officially resolved a recent diplomatic dispute, culminating in the signing of a $5.1 billion five-year bilateral health cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement, announced on December 22, 2025, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, signals a renewed era of strategic collaboration between both nations.

Key Details of the Health Agreement

Largest Co-Investment Under U.S. Global Health Strategy

The MoU represents the largest co-investment by any country under the U.S. government’s America First Global Health Strategy, underscoring Nigeria’s central role in global health diplomacy.

Funding Structure

The total $5.1 billion commitment comprises:

  • $2.1 billion in grant funding from the United States.
  • $3.0 billion in domestic health expenditure from Nigeria.
Strategic Focus

The partnership will address critical health challenges, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and polio, while also prioritizing maternal and child health.

Support for Christian Facilities

A notable provision allocates approximately $200 million in dedicated support for over 900 Christian faith-based healthcare facilities, which collectively serve more than 30% of Nigeria’s population, particularly in underserved regions.

Implementation Areas

The agreement will be executed through seven technical pillars:

  1. Laboratory systems
  2. Surveillance and outbreak response
  3. Health commodities
  4. Frontline workers
  5. Data systems
  6. Strategic investment
  7. Technical assistance

Resolution of the Diplomatic “Spat”

The recent diplomatic tension arose from U.S. concerns over religious freedom and security, following allegations of violence against Christian communities that led to Nigeria’s redesignation as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

Firm Diplomacy

Minister Mohammed Idris confirmed that the disagreement was resolved through “firm but respectful diplomatic engagement,” paving the way for a more mature and balanced partnership between both nations.

Future Outlook

As part of the renewed relations, newly appointed Nigerian ambassadors are expected to formally assume their duties in 2026, reinforcing bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

Conditional Progress

The United States has stated that programs under the MoU may be reviewed or terminated if they fail to align with national interests or if Nigeria does not demonstrate measurable progress in protecting vulnerable communities.

Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case stemming from a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for three days before finding the rapper not guilty on all five federal felony counts. Lil Durk had been accused of orchestrating a revenge plot against Tyquian Bowman (Quando Rondo) following the 2020 killing of Banks’ friend, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett. Prosecutors alleged Banks planned, ordered, and financed the operation, which ultimately led to the death of Bowman’s cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, during an ambush on August 19, 2022.

The defense maintained Lil Durk’s innocence, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was responsible for the alleged scheme. Banks was arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two murder-for-hire-related counts. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but acquitted of other charges.

Following the verdict, supporters celebrated outside the Los Angeles courthouse. Defense lawyer Drew Findling stated that Banks was “thankful” for the acquittal.

Despite this acquittal, the 33-year-old rapper, who has achieved significant commercial success with seven top-five albums since 2019 and collaborations with artists like Drake and J. Cole, remains in custody. He faces a separate federal trial next month on racketeering, murder, and firearms charges, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted.

In a statement released on Friday, Netanyahu offered condolences to the families of a commander and three fighters killed by Hezbollah, describing the attack as a blatant violation of the ceasefire.

“We Won’t Tolerate Attacks On Our Soldiers”

Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israeli military to respond with full force against Hezbollah positions.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would continue to act decisively to thwart any threat to Israeli forces and territory.
