Red Alert: NBA and FIDA Demand Immediate Action as ‘One Chance’ Syndicate Claims Professional Lives in Abuja

Summary:
The Nigerian legal community is in mourning following the gruesome murders of a lawyer and a nurse in the Federal Capital Territory. Legal bodies are now urging the government to declare a state of emergency on security to dismantle the deadly “one chance” criminal networks terrorizing the nation’s capital.

The veneer of safety in the Federal Capital Territory has been shattered following a resurgence of violent urban crimes, prompting a fierce outcry from Nigeria’s legal community. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) have issued a strong mandate to the government to tackle the rising insecurity after the brutal murders of two female professionals in Abuja.

The capital city has been plunged into a state of grief and anxiety following the discovery of the bodies of Chigbo Mediatrix, a lawyer and former treasurer of the NBA Abuja Branch, and Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, a nurse with the Federal Medical Centre. Both women fell victim to the notorious “one chance” operators—criminal gangs masquerading as commercial transport providers to rob, abduct, and often kill unsuspecting passengers.

In a strongly worded statement, the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), described the incidents as a damning indictment of the security architecture in Abuja. He noted that commuting has turned into a deadly gamble for citizens who are merely trying to return home from their lawful engagements. The association stressed that these were not just statistics, but vital contributors to society whose lives were cut short by unchecked criminality.

Echoing this sentiment, the Chairperson of FIDA Abuja Branch, Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko, condemned the killings as a reflection of a system that is failing to protect its most vulnerable. FIDA has called on the FCT Administration to immediately deploy technology, specifically functional CCTV systems, along major transport corridors to track and dismantle these syndicates.

The legal bodies have charged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Police Command to treat the situation as a security emergency. They are demanding the sanitization of the commercial transportation sector, rigorous registration of operators, and intensified intelligence-driven patrols. The consensus from the legal sector is clear: the time for condolences is over; immediate, visible, and decisive action is required to restore order and safety to the seat of power.
