Quick Summary:
NnamdiKanuAppeal2025 as Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, announces plans to appeal the IPOB leader’s life imprisonment sentence, calling the judgment flawed and unsupported by evidence.

Legal Team Rejects Court Verdict

The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has vowed to appeal his life imprisonment sentence, describing the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court as legally unsound.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the verdict, Aloy Ejimakor, a consultant on Kanu’s legal team, said the defence would take the matter to the Court of Appeal.

“What kind of precedent is being laid here? We are heading to the Court of Appeal,” Ejimakor stated. “The Court of Appeal is the next forum in this country that sits as a jury. We will approach the justices to review what happened today, and we are confident they will see this as a travesty of justice.”

Grounds for Appeal

Ejimakor questioned the basis of the conviction, arguing that Kanu was punished for speech rather than action.

“This is the only day I have witnessed a man being convicted for mere pronouncements, for what he said, not for any act he committed,” he said.

He further described the sentence as “overbroad, cruel, and unusual,” insisting that the court failed to establish any direct link between Kanu’s broadcasts and acts of violence or terrorism.

“How can someone be convicted for a broadcast from a location that was never named, without linking it to any act of violence or terrorism?” Ejimakor asked.

Next Legal Steps

The defence team confirmed that if the Court of Appeal upholds the conviction, they will proceed to the Supreme Court.

“Nnamdi Kanu is not going to stand convicted. The decision will be overturned,” Ejimakor declared, expressing confidence that higher courts would rectify what he described as a miscarriage of justice.

The appeal is expected to challenge both the legal interpretation of the terrorism charges and the evidentiary basis of the Federal High Court’s ruling.

The victims—seven males and four females—were rescued during an intelligence-led operation conducted by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the operation followed intelligence received on October 19, 2026, concerning a suspected hideout.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the victims were allegedly deceived by a fellow Ghanaian national who promised to facilitate their travel abroad. Each victim reportedly paid GH₵40,000 before being brought to Nigeria and detained against their will.

The victims are currently receiving care and support, while detectives work to identify and arrest other members of the alleged criminal network.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its prompt response and professionalism. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and combating transnational crime, stating that Ogun State would not become a safe haven for criminals.
