Quick Summary:
Federal Government charges former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and his son with 16 counts of money laundering involving over ₦1.014 billion and multiple property acquisitions.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially filed 16 counts of money laundering and illegal funds concealment against former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

The charges involve over ₦1.014 billion allegedly traced to a Sterling Bank account and property acquisitions across multiple states, marking one of the most high-profile corruption cases in recent years.

Details of the Charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed the charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing Malami, his son, and a co-defendant — Hajia Bashir Asabe, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties — of using corporate entities to disguise the origin of illicit funds between 2015 and June 2025.

Key Allegations
  • Concealment of Funds:
Malami allegedly procured Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited to conceal ₦1.014 billion in a Sterling Bank account, in violation of the Money Laundering Act.
  • Property Acquisitions:
The EFCC claims the defendants used illicit funds to acquire properties worth billions of naira across Abuja (Maitama, Asokoro, Jabi), Kano, and Kebbi States.
Investigators reportedly traced 41 properties valued at over ₦212 billion linked to Malami.
  • Violation of Law:
The alleged offences contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and 2022.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Malami has been in EFCC custody since December 8, 2025, after failing to meet stringent administrative bail conditions in a related case.

He was granted interim bail by an FCT High Court on December 23, 2025, but remained in custody as of the filing of the new charges.

The case has been adjourned, with further proceedings expected in early January 2026.

Malami has consistently described the investigation as a “politically motivated witch-hunt.”

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. Sani, both of whose residents are reportedly from Na’ibawa in Kano State, escaped and is currently the subject of a police manhunt.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
