Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to public health protection with the inauguration of the State One Health Technical Committee (SOHTC), a new body designed to strengthen disease control and emergency preparedness across the state.
The inauguration, held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, was conducted by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ibrahim, on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf. The event marks another milestone in the state’s integrated health strategy following the earlier establishment of the State One Health Steering Committee (SOHSC).
Strengthening the One Health Framework
According to a statement issued by Musa Tanko, Press Secretary to the SSG, the SOHTC will operate under the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC). Its primary role is to supervise and coordinate the activities of the State One Health Coordinating Unit, ensuring a unified approach to managing human, animal, and environmental health.
The committee’s mandate includes:
- Collaborating with development partners to prevent and contain disease outbreaks.
- Enhancing emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.
- Promoting inter-ministerial and multi-sectoral collaboration.
- Advocating for adequate funding of One Health initiatives.
- Implementing and reviewing integrated One Health plans.
Government’s Commitment to Public Health
In his address, Umar Ibrahim emphasized the administration’s dedication to improving citizens’ health and expressed confidence in the professional competence and dedication of the committee members.
He urged the committee to maintain regular communication with the SOHSC through periodic reports and to strengthen collaboration among ministries, departments, and agencies.
The SSG also called for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among implementing bodies to serve as the operational framework for the State One Health Coordination Unit.

The SOHTC comprises senior officials from key ministries, agencies, and partner organizations. Members include:

Committee’s Response
Speaking on behalf of the committee, the Chairman, who also serves as the Director of One Health Coordination at KNCDC, expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for the trust placed in them.
He appealed for public support and prayers as the committee begins its work to strengthen disease surveillance, response, and prevention across Kano State.
