The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Mr. Ovat Agbor, member representing Obubra I State Constituency, indefinitely over alleged violent conduct.
Although the Assembly did not disclose full details of the incident, Agbor is alleged to have repeatedly assaulted his wife, reportedly linked to excessive drinking and late-night behavior.
The House, during Thursday’s plenary, strongly condemned the alleged act, describing it as unbecoming of a legislator and contrary to the ethical standards expected of public office holders.
Motion and Resolution
The suspension followed a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo, both of whom argued that such behavior undermines the integrity of the legislature.
After deliberations, the House resolved that Agbor be suspended from all legislative activities indefinitely.
A committee was also constituted to investigate the matter and report its findings for further legislative action.
Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in compliance with the directive.
Speaker Reaffirms Commitment to Discipline
Speaker Elvert Ayambem emphasized that the Assembly remains committed to upholding discipline, dignity, and integrity within its ranks.
The suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the committee’s investigation.
Governor and First Lady Condemn Alleged Abuse
Before the suspension, Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, had rebuked Agbor, describing his alleged actions as irresponsible.
Reports indicate that Speaker Ayambem had previously intervened personally, visiting Agbor’s residence at night to rescue his wife and take her to the hospital.
Wife Withdraws from Legislators’ Wives Association
In a public statement, Mrs. Glory Agbor urged the public to respect her privacy, announcing her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
She also apologized to her husband and family, describing the controversy as a misconception.
