Quick Summary:
Hoodlums assault Oyo State firefighters during emergency response in Olodo, Ibadan, injuring one officer; police confirm arrests as investigation continues.

Hoodlums looting valuables at the scene of a fire incident in Ibadan have attacked operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service, leaving one officer seriously injured.

The attack occurred on Sunday at Atari-Agbon, Oki Area of Olodo, while firefighters were responding to a tanker accident involving a MACK trailer loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.

Firefighters Prevent Explosion Before Attack

Akinwande explained that the team, led by ACFS Bamidele Samsudeen, was promptly deployed to the scene to prevent an explosion.

The operation was successfully completed, but as the firefighters were packing up their equipment, looters attacked them with broken bottles, stones, and cutlasses.

Injured Officer Hospitalized, Police Make Arrests

It reportedly took almost an hour to rescue the injured officer due to the chaotic activities of the hoodlums.

The first hospital approached refused to admit the victim, fearing an invasion by the attackers, but he was later transferred to another facility where he is responding to treatment.

Akinwande confirmed that the case has been reported to the Iyana Ofa Police Station, where some arrests have been made.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
