Seriake Dickson Says Real-Time Transmission Alone Won’t Guarantee Transparent Elections

Quick Summary:
Senator Seriake Dickson argues that real-time electronic transmission of results is not the sole determinant of electoral transparency, stressing that Nigeria is not yet ready for full electronic voting.

Senator Seriake Dickson, a member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, has said that real-time transmission of election results does not automatically guarantee transparent elections in Nigeria.

Speaking on Tuesday during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, Dickson addressed the ongoing Electoral Act amendment debate, noting that the country is not yet ready for electronic voting at polling units.

“INEC Already Uses iREV Without Legislative Backing”

The former Bayelsa State Governor explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already been implementing aspects of electronic result transmission through its Result Viewing Portal (iREV) since the 2023 general elections, even without explicit legislative backing.

He added that the current amendment seeks to provide a legal framework to safeguard and protect the iREV process, rather than introduce a completely new system.

Context of the Debate

The Senate on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act, approving electronic transmission of results but allowing manual collation where technical issues arise.

The decision has sparked public criticism, with many Nigerians accusing lawmakers of weakening electoral transparency by creating loopholes that could enable manipulation.

Dickson’s remarks, however, suggest that the focus should be on strengthening INEC’s operational integrity and technological reliability, rather than on the semantics of “real-time” transmission.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. Sani, both of whose residents are reportedly from Na’ibawa in Kano State, escaped and is currently the subject of a police manhunt.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
