Cyberattack on Nigeria’s Business Titans

The Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, and the Chairman of First HoldCo Plc, Femi Otedola, have reportedly had their mobile phones hacked by cybercriminals.

According to sources cited by The Cable, both men’s phones were compromised within the past week. While Otedola’s device was hacked once, Dangote’s phone was infiltrated twice in two days, raising concerns about a coordinated cyberattack targeting Nigeria’s most prominent business figures.

Hackers Demand Ransom

Insiders revealed that the hackers have made financial demands from both men. It remains unclear whether Dangote and Otedola have regained full access to their devices or if negotiations are ongoing.

“The hackers are asking for money from both men,” a source close to the situation disclosed.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but cybersecurity experts warn that high-profile individuals in Africa are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated digital extortion schemes.

Friendship and Business Ties

Dangote and Otedola share a longstanding friendship, often referring to each other as “brothers.” Their relationship extends beyond business, with both men frequently supporting each other’s ventures and public initiatives.

Otedola was present when Dangote recently announced plans to expand the Dangote Refinery’s capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

At the event, Otedola described Dangote as “Africa’s pride,” praising his friend’s commitment to industrial growth and national development.

“Aliko’s relentless commitment to investing in Nigeria and Africa will outlive him as these are legacy investments that will define generations,” Otedola said. “Soon, Nigerians will own part of this refinery, a powerful reminder that this vision is not just for Dangote, but for all Nigerians and Africans.”

Otedola’s Recent Investment Moves

Beyond his friendship with Dangote, Femi Otedola continues to expand his business portfolio. The billionaire recently increased his stake in First HoldCo Plc, acquiring 64.87 million shares valued at approximately ₦2.01 billion.

Otedola, author of the best-selling book Making It Big, has been vocal about his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s financial and industrial sectors through strategic investments.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
