Alan Shearer Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal: Shearer predicts Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres will improve his goal tally and start scoring again, praising his impact on Mikel Arteta’s side.
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has backed Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres to rediscover his scoring touch for the Gunners. Shearer, speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, acknowledged that while Gyokeres is not in the same league as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, the Swedish international has nonetheless brought a new dimension to Mikel Arteta’s side and is poised to improve his goal tally.
Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting during the summer transfer window, has found the net just three times so far this season for the North London club. The 27-year-old was unable to add to his tally as Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham in their latest Premier League fixture.
Shearer commented, “Gyokeres is not in the league of the three we showed in the previous clip [Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe], far from that. But I think he brings a different strength, there’s no doubt that he will have to improve his goalscoring, as you said, he has only got three.”
The former England striker highlighted Gyokeres’ impact on Arsenal’s overall play, noting that his movement and physicality help create space for his teammates. “When you are running the other way, they get deeper and deeper, and that then opens up space for others to play. I think from that point of view, he has improved Arsenal,” Shearer explained.
Despite a slow start in front of goal, Shearer remains confident that Gyokeres will benefit from the number of chances Arsenal create. “I think he will get the goals, obviously, nowhere near as many as he got last season. But he will get goals with the number of chances that Arsenal create, he will, and his numbers should improve,” Shearer concluded.
Gyokeres will be hoping to repay his manager’s faith and Shearer’s prediction as Arsenal continue their push for Premier League success this season.
