Quick Summary:
The state government reiterates its refusal to negotiate with bandits following a deadly attack in Bukkuyum that left at least 26 people dead, pledging new strategies to combat insecurity.

The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed its stance against negotiating with bandits, vowing to intensify security operations and adopt new strategies to curb persistent attacks across the state.

Deputy Governor Mani Mumuni Masamar Mudi made this known during a condolence visit to Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, following a recent assault that claimed at least 26 lives and left several others injured.

Government Condoles With Victims’ Families

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Shehu Adamu Gusau, the deputy governor expressed deep sorrow over the killings and commended the courage of residents who resisted the attackers and reportedly neutralised some of the bandits.

Mudi, speaking on behalf of the state government, extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the victims and the quick recovery of the injured.

Lawmakers Consider Self-Defence Legislation

During the visit, the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, praised the community for its bravery and hinted that the Assembly may consider legislation to allow communities to bear arms for self-defence within constitutional limits.

He noted that empowering communities to defend themselves could serve as a deterrent to future attacks, provided such measures are properly regulated.

Community Appeals For Support

The Chief Imam of Bunkasau, Malam Abubakar, thanked the delegation for the visit and recounted the community’s repeated experiences of attacks. He said residents had recently mounted resistance against the assailants but needed additional government support to strengthen local security.

Officials Accompany Deputy Governor

The deputy governor was accompanied by senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ahmad Garba Yandi, and the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Mannir Fura Girke.

Their visit underscores the state government’s renewed commitment to addressing insecurity through community engagement, intelligence sharing, and coordinated security operations.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. However, the victim raised an alarm after sensing danger, attracting members of the public who apprehended Badamasi. Sani, both of whose residents are reportedly from Na’ibawa in Kano State, escaped and is currently the subject of a police manhunt.

The victim was taken to Gamuwa Primary Health Care Centre, where he remains on admission and is responding to treatment.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
