USGovernmentReopens: Trump Signs Bill Ending Record 43-Day Shutdown

Quick Summary:
USGovernmentReopens as President Donald Trump signs a bipartisan bill to end the longest government shutdown in US history, restoring pay to federal workers and reopening key agencies amid political fallout.

Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a bill officially ending the 43-day government shutdown, the longest in US history, which had left hundreds of thousands of federal employees unpaid and disrupted major government operations.

The Republican-led House of Representatives approved the Senate-passed funding package earlier in the day, reopening federal departments and agencies after weeks of political gridlock between Republicans and Democrats.

Trump Signs Bill, Blames Democrats

In a ceremony at the Oval Office, Trump signed the bill surrounded by Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, declaring that the move sends a message of resilience.

Johnson, addressing the House before the vote, accused Democrats of deliberately prolonging the shutdown.

What the Funding Package Covers

The new legislation funds military construction, veterans’ affairs, the Department of Agriculture, and Congress through next fall, while the rest of the government will be funded through the end of January.

The deal allows approximately 670,000 furloughed civil servants to return to work and ensures back pay for another 670,000 essential workers who continued working without compensation — including air traffic controllers and airport security staff.

The agreement also reinstates federal workers dismissed during the shutdown and is expected to normalize air travel across the country in the coming days.

Economic and Political Fallout

While Trump claimed Democrats cost the country $1.5 trillion, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated the shutdown caused around $14 billion in lost economic growth.

The shutdown, which began over disagreements on health care subsidies and pandemic-era tax credits, tested both parties’ political endurance.

Despite polling that showed the public largely siding with Democrats, analysts say Republicans emerged stronger from the standoff’s conclusion.

Democratic Divisions and Backlash

The end of the shutdown has sparked internal debate among Democrats, many of whom are frustrated that their leadership conceded without securing major policy wins.

For more than five weeks, Democrats had refused to reopen the government unless Trump agreed to extend health insurance tax credits that benefited millions of Americans.

However, a group of eight Senate moderates broke ranks to negotiate a compromise with Republicans, securing only a symbolic Senate vote on health care subsidies — with no guarantee of House action.

But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing backlash from the party’s progressive base for failing to maintain unity, with some House Democrats calling for his resignation.

Outside Washington, prominent Democratic figures and potential 2028 presidential contenders also voiced criticism. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the agreement “pathetic,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker described it as an “empty promise,” and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg labelled it a “bad deal.”

Looking Ahead

The reopening of the government marks a temporary reprieve in Washington’s ongoing partisan battles. With funding set to expire again in January, both parties face renewed pressure to negotiate a long-term budget deal that avoids another shutdown.

Political observers say the episode underscores the fragility of bipartisan cooperation and sets the stage for a contentious 2026 election cycle.

Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case stemming from a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for three days before finding the rapper not guilty on all five federal felony counts. Lil Durk had been accused of orchestrating a revenge plot against Tyquian Bowman (Quando Rondo) following the 2020 killing of Banks’ friend, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett. Prosecutors alleged Banks planned, ordered, and financed the operation, which ultimately led to the death of Bowman’s cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, during an ambush on August 19, 2022.

The defense maintained Lil Durk’s innocence, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was responsible for the alleged scheme. Banks was arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two murder-for-hire-related counts. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but acquitted of other charges.

Following the verdict, supporters celebrated outside the Los Angeles courthouse. Defense lawyer Drew Findling stated that Banks was “thankful” for the acquittal.

Despite this acquittal, the 33-year-old rapper, who has achieved significant commercial success with seven top-five albums since 2019 and collaborations with artists like Drake and J. Cole, remains in custody. He faces a separate federal trial next month on racketeering, murder, and firearms charges, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted.
