Quick Summary:
USFlightCuts as more than 800 flights are cancelled across the United States after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered a 4% reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including New York, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

USFlightCuts have disrupted air travel across the United States, with over 800 flights cancelled early Friday following the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) directive to reduce flight operations at 40 airports nationwide.

The FAA announced a 4% reduction in flights starting Friday to ease congestion and manage staffing challenges amid the ongoing government shutdown. The cuts could rise to 10% next week if the shutdown continues, according to CNN.

Major Airlines Cancel Flights

Several major airlines, including those operating in New York, Los Angeles, and San Diego, preemptively cancelled hundreds of flights scheduled for Friday. Data from FlightAware showed that cancellations had reached 800 by 4:30 a.m. ET, four times higher than the previous day’s total of 201.

Airlines have assured passengers of full refunds for cancelled flights and are working to rebook affected travelers.

FAA and Government Response

The U.S. Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, confirmed the flight reduction plan during a press briefing on Wednesday.

The FAA warned that if the shutdown persists, up to 4,000 flights per day could be affected due to air traffic controller shortages and operational delays.

Details of the Flight Reduction Plan

According to Bloomberg, airlines were informed that the flight cuts would primarily occur between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., with international flights exempted from the reductions.

Government officials indicated that the cuts would begin at 4% and gradually increase to 10% next week if necessary.

Industry analysts, including Sheila Kahyaoglu of Jefferies, noted that the big four U.S. airlines—which operate the majority of flights in major hubs—will likely face the greatest impact during November and December.

Growing Travel Concerns

Travel experts warn that the combination of flight cuts, staff shortages, and holiday travel demand could lead to widespread disruptions across the U.S. aviation network.

The FAA has urged passengers to check flight statuses before heading to airports and to expect longer wait times at major terminals.

Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case stemming from a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for three days before finding the rapper not guilty on all five federal felony counts. Lil Durk had been accused of orchestrating a revenge plot against Tyquian Bowman (Quando Rondo) following the 2020 killing of Banks’ friend, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett. Prosecutors alleged Banks planned, ordered, and financed the operation, which ultimately led to the death of Bowman’s cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, during an ambush on August 19, 2022.

The defense maintained Lil Durk’s innocence, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was responsible for the alleged scheme. Banks was arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two murder-for-hire-related counts. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but acquitted of other charges.

Following the verdict, supporters celebrated outside the Los Angeles courthouse. Defense lawyer Drew Findling stated that Banks was “thankful” for the acquittal.

Despite this acquittal, the 33-year-old rapper, who has achieved significant commercial success with seven top-five albums since 2019 and collaborations with artists like Drake and J. Cole, remains in custody. He faces a separate federal trial next month on racketeering, murder, and firearms charges, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted.
