President Tinubu addresses UNGA 2025, calling for debt relief, fair trade, digital inclusion, equitable resource use, a two-state solution, and Nigeria’s permanent UN Security Council seat.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria delivered a powerful address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), outlining Nigeria’s vision for global equity, peace, and development. His speech touched on pressing international issues, from economic justice to digital inclusion and global governance reform.

Sovereign Debt Relief and Access to Trade/Financing

Tinubu called for urgent action on sovereign debt relief for developing nations, stressing that unsustainable debt burdens hinder growth and poverty reduction. He urged the international community to create mechanisms that provide fair access to global trade and financing, enabling developing countries to compete on equal terms.

Benefiting from Mineral Resources

Highlighting the paradox of resource-rich but economically struggling nations, Tinubu emphasized that countries hosting mineral resources must benefit more directly from them. He advocated for investment in local processing, value addition, and job creation, ensuring that resource wealth translates into tangible development for citizens.

Closing the Digital Divide

The Nigerian leader urged the UN to spearhead a dedicated global initiative to bridge the digital divide between developed and developing nations. He argued that access to digital infrastructure, skills, and innovation is essential for inclusive growth in the 21st century.

Two-State Solution for Israel-Palestine

Reaffirming Nigeria’s long-standing position, Tinubu reiterated support for a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. He called on the international community to intensify efforts toward dialogue, mutual recognition, and peaceful coexistence.

Permanent UN Security Council Seat

Tinubu made a strong case for Nigeria to be granted a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, arguing that the current structure no longer reflects global realities. He cited Nigeria’s large population, significant peacekeeping contributions, and regional influence as justification for its inclusion.

Outlook

President Tinubu’s address underscored Nigeria’s ambition to play a greater role in shaping global governance, while also championing the interests of developing nations. His call for debt relief, digital inclusion, and equitable resource management resonated with many countries facing similar challenges.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
