The Nigerian Senate passes a bill prescribing life imprisonment for anyone convicted of defiling a minor, ensuring equal protection for all victims.
NASSBillOnDefilement marks a major legislative milestone as the National Assembly has passed a bill prescribing life imprisonment for anyone convicted of defiling a minor. The move, aimed at enforcing stricter punishment for sex offenders, underscores Nigeria’s growing commitment to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, the Senate described the defilement of minors — regardless of gender — as a “heinous act capable of destroying a child’s life forever.” Lawmakers agreed that the punishment must reflect the severity of the crime and serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.
From 20 Years to Life Imprisonment
The debate began when Senator Adams Oshiomhole proposed a 20-year jail term for offenders convicted of defiling minors. However, the motion was countered by Senator Adamu Aliero, who argued that the punishment should be more severe to reflect the gravity of the offence.
Aliero’s counter motion, seconded by Senator Olamilekan Yayi, proposed life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of defilement. The Senate unanimously adopted the amendment after a voice vote.
“The Senate has decided that any defilement of a minor in Nigeria, henceforth, attracts life imprisonment without an option of fine,” declared Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “Let everyone be aware.”
Equal Protection for All Victims
The newly reworded clause ensures that both male and female victims are recognised under the law — a significant improvement inspired by observations from Senator Oshiomhole. This inclusive approach aims to close legal loopholes that previously limited protection to specific genders.
Lawmakers emphasized that the bill is not only punitive but also symbolic, sending a strong message that Nigeria will no longer tolerate sexual crimes against children.
A Step Toward Justice and Child Protection
The passage of the bill has been widely praised by child rights advocates and civil society groups, who have long called for tougher penalties for sexual offences. The legislation is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework for child protection and align with global standards on safeguarding minors.
Once signed into law, the bill will mandate life imprisonment without the option of a fine for anyone convicted of defiling a minor, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence.
