Quick Summary:
Lagos State Wastewater Management Office seals public convenience on Savage Street, Ebute Metta, for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into public drainage.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has shut down a public convenience located on Savage Street, Ebute Metta, over allegations of illegally discharging untreated sewage into a public drainage channel.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the enforcement in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, noting that the facility was sealed on Wednesday.

According to Wahab, the closure followed the “deliberate pumping of raw sewage into the public drain,” which caused offensive odour and uncontrolled sewage flow within the community.

Government Warns Against Environmental Nuisance

Wahab described the act as environmental pollution and a public nuisance that poses serious health risks to residents.

He urged Lagos residents and facility operators to adhere to approved wastewater disposal standards and maintain proper hygiene practices to safeguard public health and promote environmental sustainability.

The commissioner further warned that the state government will impose sanctions on violators, emphasizing that any act of pollution or nuisance would attract penalties and possible prosecution.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.
