Quick Summary:
PSFU arrests three suspects for threatening to release a woman’s nude photos unless she paid N10 million.

Operatives of the Lagos Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) have arrested three individuals — two men and a woman — over an alleged cyber blackmail and extortion plot involving threats to release a victim’s nude photographs unless she paid ₦10 million.

The arrests followed a petition filed by the victim, who reported persistent threats and monetary demands from unknown persons, according to a statement issued on Friday by PSFU spokesperson, DSP Ovie Ewhubare.

Victim Extorted Under Threat

Ewhubare said the victim had received repeated phone calls warning that her private images would be made public if she failed to comply with the suspects’ demands.

The matter escalated when the suspects demanded an additional ₦10 million, prompting the victim to alert the police.

Investigation and Arrest

Upon receiving the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, Mr. Kayode Ojapinwa, ordered an immediate investigation into the allegations.

Ewhubare said police investigations led to the arrest of the three suspects and uncovered how the blackmail scheme was executed.

The suspect allegedly conspired with others, including accomplices still at large, to threaten the victim and collect money from her in multiple instalments.

Suspects in Custody, Others on the Run

The PSFU spokesperson confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Cybercrime Fight

Ewhubare noted that CP Ojapinwa reaffirmed the PSFU’s commitment to combating cyber-related offences and protecting citizens from digital exploitation.

He further advised the public to safeguard personal data, exercise caution when using digital devices, and report any form of harassment or cybercrime to the police promptly.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. However, the victim raised an alarm after sensing danger, attracting members of the public who apprehended Badamasi. Sani, both of whose residents are reportedly from Na’ibawa in Kano State, escaped and is currently the subject of a police manhunt.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
