Kebbi Development Forum urges urgent security overhaul after 33 killed in Lakurawa bandit attack on Arewa communities.

The Kebbi Development Forum (KDF) has called for urgent security reforms following the killing of at least 33 people in an attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits on eight communities in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Residents said the attackers also rustled cattle during the assault, which they described as one of the deadliest incidents recorded in the area in recent months.

The attack adds to a series of bandit-related violence affecting border communities across the state.

Forum Calls for Coordinated Security Strategy

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Chairman, Saidu Illo, the forum urged authorities to adopt a more coordinated and decentralised security approach to tackle the escalating insecurity.

The group emphasized the need to empower local institutions, including traditional rulers and local government authorities, to support community-based security initiatives.

Warning Over Rising Threats in Other LGAs

The forum also raised concerns over reported threats in parts of Koko-Besse and Ngaski Local Government Areas, warning that failure to act swiftly could worsen tensions in the affected communities.

It called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and neighbouring countries to curb cross-border criminal activities fueling insecurity in the region.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
