The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit has arrested two suspected members of the notorious street gang known as Omotaku along the Oshodi–Agunlejika–Apapa Expressway.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Chairman of the agency, Mr. Adetayo Akerele, in a statement issued by the Taskforce spokesperson, Mr. Raheem Gbadeyan.

According to Akerele, the suspects were caught extorting money from a motorist whose vehicle had broken down on the busy highway.

Operation Based on Civic Intelligence

Akerele explained that the operation followed actionable intelligence provided by a civic group, ICU – To Soul a Soul.

The suspects initially attempted to mislead operatives, claiming to be a bystander and a revenue official, but investigations revealed they were known members of the Omotaku syndicate.

Gang Targets Stranded Motorists and Truck Drivers

Akerele disclosed that one of the suspects confessed that the gang deliberately targets trucks and vehicles conveying goods from Apapa Port whenever they develop faults along the expressway.

The second suspect reportedly admitted to blocking access to vehicles as a tactic to instill fear and force drivers into paying bribes.

Longtime Watchlist Targets

The Taskforce chairman revealed that the duo had been on the agency’s watchlist for some time, having evaded arrest on several occasions despite numerous public complaints.

Prosecution and Public Warning

Akerele assured residents that the suspects would be prosecuted in line with the law, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to sanitising Lagos roads.

He urged citizens to report suspicious activities through the agency’s official channels or at the nearest police station, confirming that the suspects are in custody and will be charged to court.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
