Former Abia Governor Backs Tinubu’s Economic Policies, Warns Jonathan Against Contesting

The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi stand no chance of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, made the statement on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a political programme aired on Channels Television.

According to the lawmaker, President Tinubu has performed creditably well in reviving and stabilising Nigeria’s economy, adding that his policies are beginning to yield positive results.

“Jonathan Is Constitutionally Barred from Contesting”

Senator Kalu also cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against making any political comeback, insisting that he is constitutionally barred from contesting for the presidency again.

The senator’s remarks come amid growing political speculation about potential alliances and candidacies ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Tinubu’s Growing Support Within the APC

Kalu, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reaffirmed his loyalty to President Tinubu and expressed confidence that the ruling party will retain power in 2027.

He argued that the opposition remains divided and weakened, making it difficult for any coalition of opposition figures to unseat the incumbent president.

Political Reactions

Kalu’s comments have sparked mixed reactions across political circles, with supporters of the opposition describing his remarks as premature and politically motivated, while APC loyalists hailed his confidence in the president’s leadership.

Political analysts note that Kalu’s endorsement of Tinubu underscores the growing consolidation of support within the ruling party as preparations for the next election cycle begin to take shape.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Badamasi and his alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, reportedly offered a 21-year-old motorcyclist a sweet containing a harmful substance. The victim, who resides in the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi, allegedly became intoxicated after consuming it.

The suspects were said to have attempted to dispossess him of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. However, the victim raised an alarm after sensing danger, attracting members of the public who apprehended Badamasi. Sani, both of whose residents are reportedly from Na’ibawa in Kano State, escaped and is currently the subject of a police manhunt.

The victim was taken to Gamuwa Primary Health Care Centre, where he remains on admission and is responding to treatment.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
