At least 38 people remain trapped after an Islamic school building collapsed in Sidoarjo, East Java, leaving three dead and dozens injured. Rescuers race to save survivors.

Search and rescue teams in Indonesia are racing against time to save at least 38 people still believed trapped after the collapse of an Islamic boarding school building in Sidoarjo, East Java, which has already left three people dead.

The Incident

The multi-storey building gave way on Monday, September 29, 2025, while students were gathered for afternoon prayers, according to local reports citing eyewitnesses. Families desperate for news of their loved ones crowded around the site as emergency personnel worked through the rubble.

Casualties and Survivors

Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Mohammad Syafii, confirmed that the total number of victims stood at 102 people, comprising 99 survivors and 3 deaths.

Two of the victims died on Tuesday while being treated in the emergency room of a local hospital, according to Atok Irawan, head of the Sidoarjo hospital.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Rescue teams, supported by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), are continuing to search for 38 people still believed to be trapped under the debris.

BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari said rescuers were working urgently to save lives, with heavy equipment and sniffer dogs deployed to the site.

Safety Concerns

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about lax construction standards in Indonesia, where building collapses are not uncommon.

Earlier this month, at least three people were killed and dozens injured when a building hosting a prayer recital collapsed in West Java.

Community Impact

The collapse has devastated the local community, with many families anxiously waiting for updates. The disaster underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and improved safety oversight to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Nigeria Police Command in Benue State has dismissed reports alleging that Mobile Police personnel were withdrawn from Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, the report was described as unfounded and baseless. He stated that Mobile Police personnel remained deployed in Ayilamo alongside the Divisional Police team and other tactical units.

Aondogwu also said additional military personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, urging the public to disregard the report.

However, the traditional ruler of Ayilamo, Mue Ter, Chief Torkoer Samuel, contradicted the police account. He claimed that the Mobile Police personnel left the community on Wednesday with their equipment and Armoured Personnel Carriers.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the current security situation in Ayilamo and the extent of military presence in the community.
