NCAA confirms Delta Air Lines flight DL055 from Lagos to Atlanta diverted to Accra after oven fire. Passengers rebooked on multiple airlines as flight disruptions continue.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that a Delta Air Lines flight DL055 en route from Lagos, Nigeria, to Atlanta, United States, was forced to make an emergency diversion to Accra, Ghana, following a fire incident in the aircraft’s oven on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Emergency Diversion
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, Mr. Michael Achimugu, disclosed the incident on X, stating that the diversion was necessary to ensure passenger safety.
According to him, although the fire situation was resolved, the flight crew had exceeded their rest time limits, making it impossible for the journey to continue immediately.
Passenger Rebooking
Achimugu explained that some passengers were rebooked on Delta’s Accra-New York flight the same evening, while additional passengers were accommodated on the following day.
The diverted flight, DL055 (LOS–ATL), finally departed from Accra on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at approximately 1200hrs.
Flight Cancellations and Passenger Support
On the same day, Delta’s Atlanta to Lagos flight was cancelled. Achimugu clarified that passengers were duly informed and those who arrived at the airport were provided with hotel accommodation and transportation.
He further revealed that:
- 23 passengers were rebooked on Air France.
- Others were rebooked on British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa Airlines.
- Remaining passengers are scheduled to depart on Delta’s regular flight on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 1140hrs.
He also dismissed speculation about an Air France cancellation, confirming that the flight would operate as scheduled at 0130hrs.
Outlook
The NCAA assured the public that it continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing that passenger safety remains the top priority. The incident highlights the importance of strict adherence to international aviation safety standards and crew rest regulations.
